Jeona Pontillo, a Lay Marist living in Davao City, Philippines
During November 2007, I spent two weeks with the Marist Community in Ranong.
I found Ranong a simple, quiet place. I had to adjust, especially to a language I couldn’t understand. There were some difficult times, but I also experienced some very joyful moments. I really appreciated the natural beauty around Ranong, places like the Canyon. Also, the smell of fish will always remind me of Ranong!
I learned from and really admired the Thai and Burmese people I met. Like us all, they have needs – spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. I was very struck by seeing the Burmese students in their Learning Centres. They are poor, but interested to learn. That’s something I will always remember. Most importantly, and surprisingly, I experienced the gift of acceptance.
I feel privileged that I was made very welcome in the Marist Mission in Ranong. The mission there is to bring good news to the poor. The most important aspect of the mission is service, which I believe is a key component of growth in maturity in the Lord. I noticed that service and sacrifice are worth all the effort.
I’m proud of myself and grateful to God for giving my life meaning and purpose. Thanks to the Marist Mission Ranong Community – Fr John, Fr Damian, Fr Kevin, Joey, Ronald, Ian John, Thata, Pedro, Ate Alice and Sr Yupa – and to all I met for your support. God bless you all. |
